There are no essential oils in here and nothing added for fragrance. What you smell is the distillate.

Two to three sprays from 20–30 cm while skin is still warm from cleansing. Pat, don't rub. Then go straight into Soleil while your skin is still tacky — damp.

Morning and night. Most toners lead with water. This one doesn't, and you can smell the difference the moment you open it.

Golden Mist Toner

How it is built. Every ingredient here holds a role, the way it would in a Chinese herbal formula — jun, chen, zuo, shi. The Ritual explains what each role means. A role describes an ingredient’s place in the formula; most of these are not Chinese herbs.

jun · Rose hydrosol, 35.2% of the bottle. The character of the product and its largest ingredient. It also sets the formula’s pH.

chen · Rose geranium hydrosol, greener than the rose, keeps the scent from reading as one note. Aloe vera broadens the rose and leaves a light finish on the skin. Panthenol and hyaluronic acid are the hydration pair: skin is left feeling hydrated and slightly damp, ready for the face oil.

zuo · Chamomile hydrosol softens the scent.
shi · The preservative keeps a water-based product safe to use. Citric acid holds each batch in its pH range.

Distilled water is the medium. It carries the formula without holding a role, the way water carries a decoction. Flower waters make up 63.5% of the bottle, and nothing is added for fragrance — what you smell is the distillate.
